THE 1st VISTI/MOST AND THE 4th SEAC-STIPM CONFERENCE ON SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION POLICIES AND INITIATIVES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Main Theme: Science, Technology and Innovation Policies and Management in Achieving the Circular Economy
Hanoi, December 8th, 2022
Under the permission of The Ministry of Science and Technology, Vietnam Institute of Science, Technology and Innovation (VISTI) and South-East Asian Conference on Science Technology and Innovation Policy and Management (SEAC-STIPM) will organize a scientific conference on Science, Technology and Innovation Policies and Initiatives for Sustainable Development with the main theme of Science, Technology and Innovation Policies and Management in Achieving the Circular Economy in Hanoi in December 8th, 2022. We would like to invite you to be a part of the conference and submit your papers for review.
The circular economy is a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible. In this way, the life cycle of products is extended. The circular economy will apply at the micro level (production, company, consumer), medium level (eco-industrial park), and macro level (city, region, national and transnational) aiming to realize sustainable development, that is, to create environmental quality, economic development and social justice, for the benefit of present and future generations. Like other regions, policy makers, researchers, and practitioners in Southeast Asia are very much interested in achieving the circular economy. Nonetheless, we lack concrete understanding of effective policies and firms’ technology/innovation strategies in achieving the circular economy. Therefore, we hope that this conference will partially fill in the gap.
In Vietnam, a number of economic models in line with the circular economy have been formed since the 80s such as the garden-pond-barn (VAC) model, which is an ecological and agricultural sustainability model where the components in the system are closely related to each other. Although incomplete and applied mainly on a small scale of households or cooperatives, this model has shown initial economic benefits in terms of resource utilization and reduction of environmental impacts due to the harmful effects of wastes. In recent years, many initiatives on sustainable corporate governance and promotion of the circular economy to respond to climate change, strengthening the public-private partnership model are being proposed and gradually implemented. Some outstanding programs such as the program of collecting and recycling waste of a group of businesses at a number of large enterprises such as Heineken Vietnam, Unilever Vietnam have been implemented. However, to achieve success for the transformation of Vietnam’s economy towards the model of the circular economy, it is necessary to have the cooperation of the state, businesses, scientists and the community.
